All You Need To Know About Sub-Ohm E-Liquids

Sub-ohming has become pretty common among vapers in the last couple of years. It’s the modern alternative to the classic e-cigarette because it produces more billows, a smoother vape and a richer burst flavour.

However, sub-ohms are not for everyone and are preferred for smoking at home rather than out in public - due to the giant clouds. It also tends to be more expensive than traditional vaping.

Let’s take a closer look.

What is sub-ohm vaping?

The atomiser coils in vape mods all have a fixed ohm measurement. Classic vapes have a resistance between 1.5-3 ohms. Sub-ohm vaporisers have an electrical resistance which is lower than 1 ohm - hence the name.

Sub-ohm atomiser coils allow higher levels of electric current to pass through than standard coils. This means the e-liquid burns faster, produces a robust flavour and generates thick clouds.

From a vaping perspective, sub-ohming sends more nicotine into the bloodstream. If levels are too high for you, it is advisable to reduce the e-liquid nicotine to 12mg or less.

One of the advantages of sub-ohm vaping kits is they have more features than standard e-cigarettes so that users can adjust the device and enjoy a vaping experience that suits your preferences.

Beginners to vaping will need to experiment a little, but your device settings and PG-VG ratio in e-liquids have a significant role in your vaping experience.

What E-Liquids Are Recommended For Sub-Ohming?

Sub-ohm e-liquids generally have a higher VG (Vegetable Glycerine) content than a PG (Propylene Glycol). A typical proportion is 80VG/20PG or 70VG/30PG.

However, e-liquids with 50/50 ratios are acceptable for sub-ohm devices and can also be used for classical e-cigarettes.

If you are contemplating sub-ohming, it is important to understand the difference between VG and PG ratios. VG produces plumes and is a milder, smoother vaping experience.

E-liquids that have a higher PG ratio deliver a throat hit - which cigarette smokers prefer. However, a e-liquids with a higher PG content in sub-ohm devices can leave you with a sore throat.

What are the Advantages of Sub-Ohm Vaping?

Sub-ohm vaping is a different experience to smoking traditional cigarettes because the vape goes directly to your lung rather than mouth-to-lung.

If you want a vaping experience that mimics smoking traditional cigarettes, classic e-cigarette vaping kits may be more preferable. Smokers often take some time to adapt to sub-ohming.

That said, sub-ohming has risen in popularity over the last few years because the devices provide more benefits than e-cigarettes and, some would argue, deliver a superior vaping experience.

Vaping boils down to personal preference. However, the benefits you can expect from sub-ohm vaping are:

  • A pleasurable vaping experience
  • More intensity of flavour from sub-ohm e-liquids
  • Larger vape clouds
  • Superior devices with more features to customise your vape experience
  • Access to more product options

It’s also worth taking note of the disadvantages of sub-ohming before decided which type of vaping kit to invest in.

Disadvantages of Sub-Ohm Vaping?

  • Sub-ohm devices burn e-liquids quicker so are used up faster. It is therefore more expensive than classic vaping
  • Batteries also drain quicker
  • Sub-ohm products are more expensive because they are better quality
  • Inviting a higher electrical current presents a higher risk. If you follow safety standards, however, you can avoid damaging your equipment and causing harm to yourself

Sub-ohming is a popular choice among vapers, but your decision should rest on what you are looking for in your vaping experience. For more information about the experiences you can expect, check out our article on the difference between classical vaping and sub-ohm vaping.
